From the front yard, I look out.
A white car passes, then
the black carriage, slowly.
My feet are on the ground—
clipped grass hardened
like fearful lovers gazing at the absence
between them, their lack of touch.
I stand in this fullness
of loss, a reminder served
season after season, or night after night.
Memory fails where the world keeps on,
or is it the other way around,
the world a let-down, the trimmed branches
only blazing in the mind’s weakest chambers?
There are so few good lights these days
which we were born inside of fat with ignorance.
I was raised among a lushness of hills
and swollen ears of corn come August,
creeks bent like streaks of lightning,
where the rosé sun strolled in each morning above
the screams of feeding hogs
and other abstract echoes leaking
from the blue valley.
Maybe the present moment
only calls back in a voice
that sounds as if it’s out of breath.
Maybe the rain
isn’t the only thing here
capable of baptism. Maybe the snow.
Once, somewhere in those hills
so distant from me now, a man
looked out from the top of a tree and saw
possibility. Of course, this meant the end
of something. We know the story. We know
the tree that held the man who had a vision
didn’t last. We know the sun rose today
and the sky was pink and empty,
and whatever’s out here
that I perceive as something waiting—
this grass, or those leaves—
waiting to be named,
stands beside me. The carriage passes.
The song is sung. The season turns
to colors only vibrant in the mind,
coming together, pulling apart.

It’s way too cold for April
A body doesn’t know just how to feel
Rats and raccoons scheming with the groundhogs
Everybody searching for a meal
It happens every year
Tricked and tickled by an early spell
But heaven’s frozen over
We’ll probably make it but it’s hard to tell
But it will come in time, you know it will
It will come in time, I know it
It will come in time, I promise
Puppy’s under covers every night
Snoring with the crickets
I can’t close the windows oh my god
I’m willing early light
Find a spot to sun bake
Fight for light with snowdrops and the squill
Every seconds precious
With only 3 hours to refill
But it will come in time, you know it will
It will come in time, I know it
It will come in time, I promise

Water Strider
03:23
|
|||
Trapped outside
Try to discover a beautiful thing
Walked through the field
Down the stairs
Kissed all the ladies of valley ravines
To pollinate me
On the pool
Lone water strider skates up to my ear
Wants me to hear
Ask his name
He sings the most beautiful lyrics to me
Puts me to sleep
Now the earth isn’t humming again
Eden’s off the air, fruits off the tree
Is it me?
Have I discovered the terrible you
What can we do
I stared into the earths eyes
And breathed into its lungs
I watched the blue and red begin to ripple through its veins
Honey waves of shivers scattered sharp across its chest
Grass eaters ski the glade to escape
Swallows scattered with hummingbird colors
Paradise flycatching heavy petal bloomers
Pineapple rain blasting paint ear to ear
Everything died and was living at once in the sun
I woke up
Back in the city of fern, felt the grass
Raise with my arms
Water strider
Told me I should take it personally
it’s all for me

Everything Is Alive
02:45
|
|||
Notice a leaf
What does it mean
For it to be
Green in the heat
After it meets
Carbon defeat
But No hope for trees
Cut to their knees
How’s this for me?
Everything is alive, it’s alive!!!!!!!
Blacktop breaks up
Bricks turn to dust
What’s underneath?
Hands in the dirt
What could it hurt
Be with the worms?
We used to dance
But we used to pray
Everything’s change
Everything is alive, it’s alive! ! ! !! !!

Cloudbather

Cover my life with an ocean of noise
I am the rainbow you kissed as a boy
Rot in the fruit that you want to enjoy
Stuck in the basement with only our joy to guide us
Lavender death spilled all over my chin
Library looks from a face with no skin
Under the bridge on the road laced with sin
Singing too quietly, “run away with me”
Bathing in clouds from the hill by the stream
White dog or sheep lets a breath start to breathe
Guilty just eating the peach from the tree
What do you do when the spirit comes all over you
Take off your shoes and get thrown in the lake
My purple messenger says it's too late
Give sympathy to the dead when they take
Suckle the blessing before it's too late

Really Comin Down
02:30
|
|||
Shadows move different in the snow
Time slows, it’s hard to let it go
But it keeps coming down
And it’s hard to find a sound
Don’t cry, the trees will all be fine
They’re just tired, just like you and I
Cuz it keeps coming down
And it’s hard to find a sound
